Rodney Neville Cullen was born on 23rd January, 1941 and passed away on 15th January, 2020.
Aged 78 years. Late of Regis Aged Care, Birkdale and formerly of Thomas Healy Drive, Bundaberg. Passed away peacefully on January 15, 2020. Beloved husband of Jill (dec’d). Dearly loved father & father-in-law of Bradford, Tracey & Justin, Rohen & Jeanene, Sean & Sarah and step-father of Jeanette. Loving grandfather of Liam, Grace, William, Henry, Phillipa and Parker.

Relatives and friends of Rodney and his family are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral Service to be held at Christ Church, Anglican Church, Maryborough Street, FRIDAY, January 24, 2020 at 10:00am, prior to a private cremation at ‘Branyan Gardens’, Bundaberg Crematorium.
Gail and I are saddened to hear of the death of Rod. Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow for your loss. Rod was one of the great sugar industry characters I got to work with over a long period and get to know well. May he now rest in peace with Jill by his side.

Rod Cullen will be remembered for the significant contributions he made to the Australian sugar milling industry through his chosen career of Engineering and also through his empathetic approach to industrial relations management. He was well-respected by his peers and was an excellent mentor to any new-comer to the industry. He was interesting, well-read and had a willing, energetic, hands-on approach to any issue he became involved in. Rod was a also a loyal friend. Sincere condolences to Rohen & Jeanene and all the Cullen family.

To the family of Rod Cullen I would like to extend my condolences for your loss.
Rod was the Chief Engineer at Sugar Research Institute, Mackay and interviewed me for the position of Research Electronics Engineer. I moved with my family to Mackay in 1977 and enjoyed the work under the management and leadership provided by Rod. Sadly I lost touch after leaving SRI in 1982 but have retained contacts with other SRI work colleagues who informed me of Rod’s passing.
The best wishes of myself and my family are extended to Rod’s family in this time of grief and loss.

Rod joined the SRI in the early 1960s, becoming the Head of Engineering in the early 70s, and later the Deputy Director of Engineering. Rod was a man of great talent and integrity. He had a wonderful career and made a major contribution to the sugar industry – a life you and your family should be immensely proud of.

Dear Brad, Tracey, Rohen, Sean and Jeanette and families
Rod was a wonderful man.
He engaged me as a mechanical engineer into his SRI Engineering Section from Newcastle in 1974. During my five years at SRI he gave me direction, support, mentorship and friendship. Not once did he reprimand me for poor decisions or performance.
It very rapidly became apparent that Rod was held in very high regard by both mill managers and senior engineers, not only because of his expert knowledge of milling and boilers, but also because of his inclusiveness, friendliness and non-judgemental approach to all issues and personnel.
We met again when Rod joined Bundaberg Sugar about a year after me and I have sought to maintain our contact ever since.
As a senior manager he was in constant demand from the various mill engineers for his specific sugar engineering knowledge and his broad industry and international experience and exposure. He maintained his unquestioned confidence in the SRI developed milling technology (much of the later developments of which was undertaken by Rod or under his direction and tutorship) during all those years
He was very well liked by mill managers, mill staff and mill personnel alike. Many studies were undertaken under his direction. Not once did he claim any input or kudos. His input was always significant. Rod always gave as much as requested of him.

I worked under Rod’s management at Bundaberg Sugar during the time of change of Engineering Maintenance Practices. He was a pleasure to work for. His vast experience & hands on approach was an inspiration in the implementation of any change. I will always have fond memories of Rod & Jill.
Unfortunately family circumstances prevent my attendance on Friday.
